mathew 6:22-24
"The eye is the lamp of the body. if your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. if the the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters. Either she will hate the one and love the other, or she will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."( I changed the "he"'s to "she"'s)
I meditated on this scripture for a while today...It really struck me because time and time again i have seen truth of this warning. When i was in high school i was completely love sick. I was so devastated (like every high school girl is) that i did not have a boyfriend. When i made myself stop watching my favorite shows, like gossip girl or one tree hill or soap operas (and yes, i did sneak around the house as a little girl watching those horrible shows...and yes, i still watch General Hospital, but only the clips with my bff Julie Berman in them, so dont judge), i realized that my obsession over finding a boyfriend decreased. Because my eyes weren't taking in the love-story saturated media, the light in my heart grew a bit brighter.
This scripture can be applied to so many areas in life...pornography (which is so readily available to anyone with access to a computer or a smart phone..which i pretty much everyone in developed nations), television and film that depict explicit sex, drug, violence, and dysfunctional relationships, violence in the world, night clubs...i think everyone can conjure up images from the world and media that has let darkness seep into our hearts through our eyes.
